You may ask what is Dermaplaning and why would I need it? Maybe you have heard about this new craze to have hit the Beauty and Skincare scene and are intrigued to find out more?

Keep reading below for a full explanation…..

What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a super effective method of exfoliation in which your therapist will use a sterile surgical scapel to gently remove the skin surface. This eliminates the Stratum Corneum (aka Dead skin cells) and ‘peach fuzz’ (aka fine vellus hairs) that have built up on the skin surface over time.

Why is resurfacing of the skin necessary?

When there is a build up of dead skin cells and microscopic hairs on the surface of your skin it can cause a dull, uneven and flaky looking complexion and can even lead to breakouts/blocked pores. It will also prevent your skincare products from penetrating and essentially feeding the ‘new’ skin cells that are forming in the lower layers of the epidermis. Dermaplaning is a form of mechanical exfoliation which is essential for maintaining a healthy glowing, even complexion and will rid the dead skin cells from the skin.

Will Dermaplaning cause hair to grow back darker or thicker?

Your vellus hair will grow back exactly the same color and thickness as it was previous to getting a Dermaplaning Facial.  By Dermaplaning we are not changing the internal structure of the hair follicle, and are only removing the hair to the surface skin level. Hair does however grow back as normal and can sometimes feel like it has a blunt edge as it begins to peek through the hair follicle. Once it has fully grown back it will look and feel the exact same as before. It is important to note that vellus hair has a completely different makeup and function to that of terminal hair that tends to grow on areas like our legs, underarms, bikini area (and sometimes the lip & chin, often times caused by an increased level of the androgen hormone)

Does Dermaplaning remove hair on the face that I usually get waxed?

This type of hair growth would be known as Terminal hair and is naturally thicker, darker and coarser than vellus hair. Yes Dermaplaning will remove it. but will only take it back to skin level. You may choose or prefer to wax this hair away prior to your Dermaplaning appointment (must be done up to 48hours beforehand). You may also choose to have it removed during your Dermaplaning Facial. It is important to note that if you do choose to have the terminal hair removed during your Dermaplaning session it may feel a little pricklier and blunter than normal as it grows back as it has only been taken back to skin level and not removed from the follicle with the root attached like waxing. If you are unsure on the approach to take, this can be discussed with your Therapist in detail prior to your treatment.

Is it painful?

Dermaplaning is pain free! We use a dermaplaning surgical blade with light feather like strokes to remove the dead skin and peach fuzz from the skin.

Is it suitable during pregnancy?

Yes it is completely safe and fine to have the treatment done while you are pregnant.

Is it suitable for all skin types?

Yes its is, with the exception of those suffering with active acne as it can potentially spread the bacteria and cause the breakouts to worsen.

The Treatment Process……….

A thorough consultation will be held between you and your therapist, giving you the opportunity to address any questions or concerns you may have. Your skin is thoroughly cleansed and sanitised. We then get down to the Dermaplaning, where we use the surgical blade to resurface the skin. A treatment mask is then applied to quench thirsty skin and and brighten the complexion further. We then finish the treatment with moisturiser and SPF. It is essential at this point for you to care for your newly resurfaced skin and follow the homecare advice given by your Therapist. The use of an SPF is a  must (although as a rule of thumb we should be using SPF 24/7, 365 days a year regardless!) The treatment takes an hour and costs €120 or a course of 3 for €320. Ideally it can be done every 4 to 6 weeks.
